The New England Relay – Training Day 2

“All of the Lights” was tonight’s running theme. Let me start from the beginning.. I left work late today & was in by no means the mood to work out. I took a “nap” aka woke up 1.5 hrs later and it was getting dark. I took Anakin out for a walk and just said – OK get out there and get a quick run in…

So I decided to grab my Zune v. using Vance’s iPod but to add the the fact I wasn’t in the mood to work out, my zune had no battery life and therefore I was not running to my ALT Rock playlist…

I strapped on the iPod.. and headed straight for Mansur Rd’s hill.. What a way to start off a quick run. Half way through the hill, I felt the power… That I could make this into a longer run, if and only if it wasn’t getting dark and I wasn’t dressed in my darkest work out clothes. So I did my usual ‘quick run b4 dark’ route and made it a good one. Blasted Kanye’s my beautiful dark twisted fantasy an album Vance bugged me to listen to. Not as pushy as my ALT rock but I knew it had meaning when “All of the Lights” came on & it was getting dark. I snapped one of my coolest pics ever to this day – via my vingette camera app on my phone… and ended the run with a smile on my face.

Needless to say, I’m glad I made the effort even if it was a quick couple miles.

Gym Workouts Need Variety

Author: Erin Norton

Yesterday was gross in San Francisco. Somehow a 30% chance of rain from noon to 4pm turned into 12 hours of grey drizzly skies and just enough wind to make umbrellas pointless. Even with the rain I was not expecting my gym, Bay Club SF, to be packed. Maybe it was because of the weather, maybe everyone was getting in shape for summer or maybe it was because I actually left work at a normal hour, but every machine was take – elliptical, treadmills, rowers, bikes, even the strange contraptions that I’m too confused by to test out. The only open machine I could find was a lone stair machine, my least favorite of all gym machines.

Thanks to an episode of The Real Housewives of Orange County I managed to get through a half hour of mindless and repetitive stepping. The RHOC episode included a segment where Gretchen makes fun of her boyfriend for being chubby; I took her insults to him as motivation to keep climbing my steps to nowhere. Gretchen will not be calling me a chubba wooba.

After 30 minutes of boredom I snagged a bike for a quick 20 minutes and left my gym feeling like I wasted my time on workout that just didn’t do anything for my body.

On my walk to work this morning I felt muscles I had forgotten existed, my bum even kinda ached.  It was nothing terribly painful, but definitely enough to make me notice that those muscles were sore. It was a good reminder that I need to change up my gym workouts a little more often and that workouts don’t need to be painful and hard for them to be good for my body.

Maybe today I’ll test out one of those strange contraptions or spend a little time on the rowing machine.

How often do you mix up what you do at the gym?

The New England Relay – Training Day 1

Training Day 1 – was supposed to run for 45mins, I started off very strong but considering I haven’t ran outdoors in a while and being sick has delayed all training, I died around mile 1… I decided to pick up my pace and finish as fast as I could. Overall I could have ran further but I finished quickly. Had Vance’s iPod going w/ My Chemical Romance’s latest album.. have to get three great playlists going for my three legs.

Whose this Vansome character & why is he so important to BFF?

Author: Genevieve Ferratusco

Vance enjoying the 2010 summer time.

As you can see, Vansome plays a huge part of our Be Fresh Fit website. Vansome stands for “handsome Vance”. My older brother who recently passed away due to complications of drug use. I think it’s important, to be honest and open about Vance’s life & death because so many people in this world are dealing with the same problems (we) together as a family dealt with.

As a passionate person about fitness; I’ve always wanted to find the right charity, something that was near and dear to my heart but something that could really make a difference. I juggled a few organizations but it wasn’t until recently when I lost my brother,  my sober, clean for 5 years best friend. It wasn’t until then that I KNEW I had to put my fitness ways to better use.

Vance was a fitness enthusiast just like me, who was a regular and well-known face at his gym. Known for turning his life around and focusing on the great new things life had to offer. Had joined me on so many past runs, let me talk him into Bikram yoga classes and was always cheering for me at the finish line either in person or via his Twitter/Facebook pages.

Some days, I wonder how I am going to manage to make it through life without him. Losing him is harder than anything I have ever experienced. But with his passing, I realized that I could put our love of fitness to better use. There are millions of people like my brother who are trying to make their lives better, healthier and drug-free. People who just need a little push in the right direction to realize that fitness is a great way to take control of your life and stay healthy.

I’ve started to work with DrugFree.org using fitness as a way to increase awareness and drive donations. I believe that working together – we can really make a difference & I know that we can help save others from the pain of losing a child, sibling and a friend.

We;  Rachel, Erin & I have taken Vance’s nickname and have brought it to another level.. offering Vansome Running Clubs in our three cities, as well as Vansome Running Events: a place to find the top (in our opinion) races you can participate in and by 2012 – offering you a 5k in Vance’s name.  We know that every step of each process will be done in honor and grace of Vance’s memory. All the while knowing that he would be so proud and excited for playing such an important role in Be Fresh Fit’s success.

Be Fresh Fit: The Origins

Author: Genevieve Ferratusco

I wanted to provide a little background on what really made be fresh fit. After much debate with Erin on what I should do with my career, she really challenged me to think of what makes me happy. When all I could think of was Sports and Fitness, it just made sense to do something fun for “us” outside of work. We started throwing out names and I really stuck close to my favorite saying “Fresh Start”.. it is something I tell almost everyone I meet. There’s always a fresh start to your life and it doesn’t have to be just about fitness.. If you need a fresh start mentally, emotionally, physically.. it’s up to you to take those first steps. After months of a slow start and thought process of where we wanted to be with “Fresh Start” the idea died down and fell to the bottom of the priority list. It wasn’t until November 2010 when I was running and just thought “we HAVE to get this going again”… that’s when we revamped our name and started planning Be Fresh Fit. I’m proud of where we are starting and what BFF can one day become. I truly hope we can provide you with everything you came here for: SUPPORT for a healthy-happy-loving life. And hey, we’re always open for ways to improve so email us or leave your comments below.
